What is Golden Milk?

Golden milk is a milk based beverage infused with turmeric, which is the star ingredient. This turmeric is what gives it its name. Nearly all recipes also include ginger, black pepper, cinnamon and a sweetener like honey. However some choose to also add additional spices like cardamom, star anise and cloves. It’s a lot like the Masala Chai recipe on this blog. Even vanilla often makes an appearance. You can customize it however you want!

Many people drink Golden Milk for its health benefits, but you will also fall in love with the taste. Turmeric, especially combined with black pepper, is widely known for having beneficial antioxidant properties. The same can be said for ginger, cinnamon and honey. Additionally, this warm and pretty concoction also has a relaxing effect on the body, so many people consume it as a bedtime bevvy for better sleep.

What Ingredients Go in Golden Milk?

Golden Milk has only a handful of simple ingredients: milk, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon and honey. One optional ingredient some people add is a fat of some sort, usually coconut oil or ghee. But some even add a little butter. Many say this addition of a fat helps with the absorption of the other ingredients, but it is an optional ingredient.

Can I Use Plant Based Milk?

Yes definitely! It’s very common to use milk alternatives like oat milk, soy milk or any nut milk of your choice. My personal favourite milk to use is oat milk.

Can I Use Dried Ginger Instead of Fresh?

Yes you can. Simply substitute 1/2 a teaspoon of ginger powder if you don’t have fresh available.

How Do I Serve Golden Milk?

You can enjoy Golden Milk warm or cold. If you are going to drink it as a night time sleep remedy however, the best way to drink it is warm.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk any milk of choice including plant based
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated or chopped finely
  • teaspoon black pepper
  • teaspoon cinnamon or more to taste
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey more or less to taste

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan combine the milk, turmeric, ginger, black pepper and cinnamon. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring occasionally to ensure the milk doesn't scorch.
  • Once the mixture boils, reduce the heat. Simmer gently for 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Allow the milk to cool for a few minutes until it is not scorching hot. Add honey and stir well. (Adding the honey when the milk is very hot can destroy its healthful benefits.)
  • If you would like your milk foamy, use a milk frother and strain into the serving cups. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon, if desired. Enjoy warm before bedtime or any time of day. This can also be chilled if you would like to serve your Golden Milk cold.

Notes

If you don’t have fresh ginger, you can substitute 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder.
