Sourdough Donuts
Use up unfed discard from your sourdough starter for these quick old fashioned donuts.

  1. In a bowl combine all purpose flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter and shortening using a pastry blender or 2 knives until well blended. Mixture should be short.
  2. Stir in milk and sourdough starter. Mix until the dough just comes together and knead 5-6 times. Dough should be soft.
  3. Heat frying oil to 350F. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with 3 inch cookie cutter. Re roll scraps as necessary to yield 12-13 rounds. Dip finger in flour and poke a large hole into each donut. Fry donuts, a few at a time, about 2-4 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.
  4. In a dish combine 1/2 cup sugar with 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Dredge the donuts in the sugar-cinnamon mixture generously while hot. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
