Dalgona Coffee ~ A Caffeinated Miracle

Think dalgona coffee is a sophisticated concoction you can only find for eight dollars at your locally owned barista? Well, if you have a jar of instant coffee granules sitting your cupboard right now, you can very likely make it. Dalgona means sweet in Korean, and it was a Tik Tok video that sparked this simple but fascinating concoction into viral mania!

What Is Dalgona Coffee?

It is a combination of instant coffee granules, sugar and water, often in equal parts. You whip them together and in minutes it quadruples its volume and becomes a light and fluffy cream. It is this cream that you add to a glass of milk–ice cold or hot–that makes it dalgona coffee.

What Else Can You Do with Whipped Coffee?

You can also serve this coffee cream as a light feathery mousse. If someone in your life has a gluten and/or dairy intolerance, this could be your new dessert saver. Although you don’t get that same richness that real mousse has, its cloud like texture is not surprisingly satisfying. Plus when you freeze it this becomes a frozen dessert that would make both Ben and Jerry proud!

How Do You Make Whipped Coffee?

Combine equal parts of instant coffee granules and sugar in a bowl. Then slowly add an equal part of hot water while beating with an electric mixer. (The hot water is debatable; some recipes say to use ice cold water.) You can also whip it by hand with a whisk, but it takes much longer. In minutes it will increase in volume and turn a light beige. It will be light and fluffy with soft peaks.

How Long Does The Whipped Coffee Cream Last?

Because it is not bound with stable fats, whipped coffee cream eventually weeps back into a liquid state. However, the more sugar you whip into it, the more stable it becomes and it can last for several hours. Then you can use it as a frosting on cakes or cupcakes. Try it on my vegan Chocolate Avocado Cake. Be sure however to serve it that day because eventually it will weep again.

If you become a fan of freezing it as a mousse, you’ll be happy to know that in a frozen state whipped coffee stays whipped. So get out your jar of Taster’s Choice you only use for emergencies and double up!

I hope you try this cool recipe that not only has a multitude of culinary possibilities, but is also an interesting exploration of kitchen chemistry.
